392 pages Text and illustrations by AJ Dungo Translated from English by Basile Béguerie 22.9 x 17.5 cm Language: French Softcover Publisher: Casterman New edition, with a 16-page graphic section (film stills, interview) 2026
A graphic memoir in which AJ Dungo, an illustrator and surfer from Los Angeles, tells the story of his years with Kristen, from their first meetings to her fight against cancer, and keeps the promise he made her to draw it. Two threads alternate: the couple in blue, and in sepia a history of surfing, from ancestral tradition to modern sport. The surf chapters give the grief its distance.
First published in 2019 by Nobrow in London and, in French, by Casterman, In Waves won the Prix BD Fnac France Inter in 2020. Phuong Mai Nguyen’s animated adaptation opened in French cinemas on 1 July 2026; this edition, released at the end of May ahead of the film, adds a 16-page section with stills from the film and an interview.
