Set in October 1993, Graffiti Paparazzi follows Antoine Fyodor’s experiences photographing the CMP crew in the streets and métro of Paris. Smat, Dion, Here, Dreo and Xoder appear in an autobiographical narrative that approaches graffiti through the encounters and adventures of someone documenting it from close quarters. The photographer’s position gives the story its perspective: accompanying writers, observing their actions and preserving traces of work made in passing.
Around twenty black-and-white photographs and illustrations punctuate the text, connecting personal recollections with images of the people, places and graffiti described. Familiar streets and transport routes become the setting for a view of the Parisian scene in the early 1990s. Through this account of following one crew, the book records the relationship between graffiti and photography, and the role of the camera in turning fleeting actions into lasting memories.
