Widely regarded as the first book devoted to street art and, for years afterwards, the reference work on the subject. Around 130 international artists are surveyed, from Australia and Asia through Europe to the Americas, presented through photographs, quotes and interviews — stickers, posters, stencils, spraycan work and every hybrid in between. Contributors include Space Invader, Above, Honet, LeFunk and East Eric, alongside Zevs, Flying Fortress, Betamaxxx and Oxo Ovo, plus Milk, Fume and Hoernchen.
Assembled by C100, the Munich graphic designer and writer who had been painting since 1989, and issued by Publikat at the precise moment the movement was leaving the street for the gallery — the book documents the scene before it had a market. First printings were sold with 50 loose stickers and an audio CD of thirteen tracks mixed by Florian Keller of Compost Records; both are frequently absent from surviving copies. A US edition followed from Gingko Press, and the series ran to four volumes, selling over 80,000 copies worldwide.
