Published February 2008, timed to the Keith Haring retrospective at the Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon (22 February – 13 July 2008), curated by Gianni Mercurio in close collaboration with the Keith Haring Foundation and mounted for what would have been the artist's fiftieth year. The show was among the largest Haring exhibitions ever staged in France, hung deliberately against chronology and built around the vinyl and tarpaulin paintings, including the monumental canvas made in 1987 for the Knokke-le-Zoute casino; the Tokyo Pop Shop was reconstructed inside the museum.
Morel's text follows Haring out of the School of Visual Arts and into the subway — the chalk drawings on blacked-out advertising panels — then through Club 57, Documenta 7, the Shafrazi shows, the Pop Shop and the public walls, closing on the Pisa mural Tuttomondo and the late activist work. Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, Warhol and Madonna all appear in the orbit. A French art-press object rather than a scene document: useful precisely as a record of how a mainstream museum magazine framed a subway practice in 2008.
