Published in 1984, Curtis Marlow’s Breakdancing is a how-to guide that also gives the form its history. It places breaking in relation to African dance and is illustrated with photographs and step-by-step guides to specific moves. The book includes a section on the New York City Breakers, the crew that danced in Beat Street that same year. It appeared alongside Steven Hager’s Hip Hop and Michael Holman’s Breaking and the New York City Breakers, both from 1984. Of the three, it is the one written to be practised rather than read.
