A Berlin doorway can hold years of writing: a quick tag squeezed beside a handle, a throw-up across a panel, an older name still visible underneath. Photographed between 2010 and 2013, the doors in this book give those marks a frame. Looking from one entrance to the next, you begin to notice how writers use the seams, panels and narrow strips of space that most people pass without a second glance.
Texts by graffiti writers accompany the photographs, bringing their voices into a book built around the marks they leave behind. By returning to the same everyday surface, Doors of Berlin makes it easier to see the differences between handstyles and the way separate marks accumulate into a composition no single writer planned.
