La Chamba is what work is called across much of Latin America: the job, the grind, what you do to get through the month. Dorian André spent seven months crossing Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua, and came back with a first photo book about the people who are working while everyone around them is travelling — market stalls, roadside repairs, kitchens and construction sites at the edge of the places tourists come to see.
The book is built on that tension. André photographs from where he actually stands, as a foreigner passing through, and lets the position show rather than hiding it behind reportage. Urban and rural, public and private: what holds it together is work as the structure that shapes both the landscape and the day. He calls it a first chapter — the opening of a longer project meant to move closer to the daily lives of the workers themselves. Self-published, designed and laid out by the author.
