What should a record of birdsong look like? What about a civil rights speech, a John Cage composition or a poem read aloud? For Folkways Records, designer Ronald Clyne gave these very different sounds a visual language of their own. Strong typography, tightly cropped photographs and striking blocks of colour gave the label a recognisable identity while leaving room for the character of each recording.
The book gathers hundreds of sleeves, from jazz and experimental music to sea shanties, field recordings and spoken word. Among them is Nancy Dupree’s Sweet Thunder, whose direct portrait and red title band reappear on the book’s cover. Seen together, the sleeves show how much a square of printed cardboard can tell us about what a label chose to record and whose voices it wanted people to hear.
