Roger Gastman was nineteen and already selling caps to writers when he started While You Were Sleeping in 1997, from his family home in Bethesda, Maryland, just over the line from Washington D.C. The magazine soon spread into pop culture, parties and provocation. Ghetto Blaster is the part that stayed on graffiti. This first issue gives its pages to painted trains and walls, with interviews with Joker and Hence.
It is the starting point of a path that leads to Swindle, co-founded with Shepard Fairey in 2004, and later to Beyond the Streets. Here there is none of that yet, only writers talking to writers, a layout made by three people and a small company name on the masthead. This copy is in poor condition.
