A new newsprint journal with Barry McGee among its four editors, and it reads exactly like something from his orbit: no house style, no hierarchy between a museum show and a friend's drawings, everything on the same cheap paper at the same weight. Issue one runs features on Yoko Ono at The Broad, R.L. Greene at Mutmuz Gallery, Piper Lewine and Mourning Riot, then hands the rest over to some thirty contributors — Mark Mothersbaugh, Tunde Adebimpe, Bjorn Copeland, Molly Soda, Patrick Kyle, Kyle Field, Matthew Volz, Devin Flynn, Bijou Karman, alongside writers signing UNYK, LITER and Shooter. Look closely and you'll find Lydia Fong in the list, which is McGee himself: one of the alter egos he's been publishing under for decades.
The issue was printed with three covers, and the choice of names says more than an editorial would. Margaret Kilgallen— Mission School painter, sign painter, banjo player — died in 2001 at thirty-three, and her hand-lettered work has only grown in stature since. R.L. Greene is the artist the issue actually reports on. May Sorat is one of its editors.
