Yellow school buses, customised cars, recording studios and neighbourhood streets form the setting for Houston Rap, an intimate photographic account of the city’s hip-hop culture. Peter Beste moves between public gatherings and private spaces, photographing musicians with friends and family, at work and at leisure. Portraits and scenes of everyday life build a picture of Fifth Ward, Third Ward and South Park, showing how closely the music belongs to these places and the people who inhabit them.
Lance Scott Walker’s interviews bring individual voices into this visual narrative. Artists including Bun B, Z-Ro, K-Rino, Willie D and Paul Wall discuss a scene shaped by independent enterprise, neighbourhood loyalties and the legacy of DJ Screw. Recollections of Pimp C and Big Hawk add a sense of loss and remembrance, while the historical timeline connects these personal accounts to the development of Houston’s sound.
