This project was a two-week scout, marking Jeremy Elkin’s second visit to Jamaica within the same calendar year. He set out to capture unanticipated moments with local musicians, producers, record collectors, pioneers, and hustlers. While the circle of characters was initially shaped by the scout itself, it expanded organically through the relationships and conversations he developed with the people he met along the way. Most days were spent traveling back roads in the production vehicle, allowing him to move beyond structure and embrace spontaneity.
Kingston, with its hallowed ground, feels like the Ancient Egypt of the music industry. Yet the homes, buildings, and neighborhoods that supported the creation of its music remain largely undocumented in high resolution. For Jeremy, the street—much like the studio—is where experimentation unfolds. Removed from the pressures of production and business, these environments foster the creative dialogue that emerges among lifelong lovers of music. Here, technology does not outpace instruments or voices.
As a lifelong admirer of music preservation and street-oriented culture, Jeremy considered it a privilege to get to know these individuals through firsthand experience. While the work represents only a brief moment in time, he hopes it will become part of a much larger story that continues to unfold in the years to come.
