Estevan Oriol’s LA Portraits gathers over one hundred photographs from an archive he has built over more than twenty years in Los Angeles, all shot on film. It follows LA Woman and turns to the gang culture of the city: barbecues, low riders and school days sit alongside guns, drugs and memorials. In Oriol’s words, the people he photographed are “not all monsters.” The critic Miss Rosen, writing for L’Oeil de la Photographie, described the book as an unforgettable journey through colours, plaid, bandanas and baseball caps. Published by Drago, it is now out of print.
