How can the movement of a record become a written language? In Scratch graphique, Laurent Burte develops a system of signs that gives visible form to the DJ’s gestures. Repetition, interruption and changes of direction become elements of a graphic vocabulary, allowing techniques usually transmitted through listening and demonstration to be studied on the page.
The project connects experimental typography with the practical demands of musical notation. Graphic interpretations of Birdy Nam Nam’s tracks extend this approach from individual movements to complete compositions. Of particular interest to collectors of graphic design and hip-hop publications, the book explores how a physical, fleeting performance can be recorded and shared through print.
