Once upon a time, there was an artist who had been socially withdrawn for over thirty years, wandering mysteriously through the streets of Rouen. Like a hermit, he patiently engraves chaotic clouds of words and calligraphic names onto all kinds of surfaces—walls, doors, gutters, metal plates, aluminum sheets, plywood, chipboard, stainless steel, wooden planks, and stones across the city—using sharp tools such as a fork, a screw, a nail, or a knife. For passersby, it is difficult to read this strange tangle of letters, each one overlapping the next. It feels like an unsolvable riddle, hiding a message that no one has managed to decipher.
His name is Alain Rault, though he is often referred to as Alain of Rouen.
