A photographic descent into the closed half of the New York subway: 600 miles of active track, layups, ghost stations, abandoned platforms and walled-off passages that five million daily riders never see. Litwack, a native New Yorker, and the writer Jurne began by photographing graffiti below ground and ended up documenting the infrastructure itself — the eerie, still, half-lit architecture of the system. Work of this kind cannot legally be made, which is precisely what gives the book its documentary weight.
