The first attempt to document Latin American street art as a continent-wide phenomenon rather than a Brazilian export. Ruiz — writer, curator and filmmaker, then working out of Buenos Aires — travelled for years between capitals and small inland towns, and organised the results country by country: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and Central America.
Os Gêmeos, Vitché, Onesto and Medo for Brazil; Bastardilla for Colombia; Saner for Mexico; Jorge Rodríguez Gerada for Cuba — alongside a long cast of names that never travelled north. Ruiz gives real space to pixação, still read at home as vandalism rather than art, and to the way indigenous imagery, folk print traditions and the political history of the wall feed the visual language of the whole region. Published at the height of Gestalten's street art programme and out of print since the mid-2010s.
