In a dressing-room mirror at Lollapalooza, Melissa Auf der Maur catches herself and her Hole bandmates in the same frame. That double role, musician and photographer, gives My ’90s Rock Photographs its particular intimacy. Touring with Hole and later the Smashing Pumpkins, she photographed from places a press photographer rarely gets to linger: the stage itself, hotel rooms, and the corridors where a barefoot Courtney Love might pass on a bicycle.
More than two hundred photographs move between the rush of a show and the downtime around it. Fans press against the barrier, friends crowd into the frame, and self-portraits made with a timer or cable release slip into the middle of performances. The result is both a record of ’90s alternative rock and a portrait of a young artist figuring out how to be on both sides of the camera.
