224 pages Edited by Robert Whitelock Foreword by HUSH Designed by Aaron Munday / 12 Orchards 26 × 19.7 cm Language: English Hardback Publisher: Monokrome Publishing First Edition 2011
Pencil sketches, ink drawings, intricate lettering and character studies bring graffiti’s graphic foundations into focus in Monokrome. Working entirely in black and white, the selection highlights line, shading, contrast and composition, giving close attention to the drawings through which writers develop their ideas. Blackbook pages reveal different approaches to constructing letters and figures, from densely interlocking forms to spare outlines and elaborate illustrative scenes.
Edited and curated by Robert Whitelock, the book presents work and interviews from 31 international artists, including Nash & DOES, Remi/Rough, Hush, Asker, ITCH, Inkfetish, Kofie and Inkie. Their accounts accompany the images with reflections on influences and individual practice, while a separate “Soundbites” section introduces further work and comments. The result offers a view of graffiti through drawing, preserving the personal visual languages that underpin its public expression.
