Pixação is not graffiti and has never asked to be. It emerged in São Paulo in the 1980s with its own alphabet — angular, monochrome, rune-like — and its own measure of success: height. Pixadores climb façades from the outside without safety gear, using windows, cables and each other's shoulders as human ladders, to put their name where the city cannot ignore it. This is the first can Montana Colors has ever dedicated to the practice.
Eneri — Irene, written backwards — began writing on São Paulo in 2013 and became the first pixadora native to the city to gain recognition well beyond Brazil, from the STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam to rooftops in Paris and Miami. Her work turns a radical urban practice into an argument about gender, class and who gets to occupy public space; her Caóticaseries takes the misogynist vocabulary thrown at pixadoras and writes it back onto the walls. More recently she has folded Afro-Brazilian spirituality into the work, drawing on Quimbanda as a matter of ritual, memory and resistance.
For the can she chose a still from one of her own videos — not a portrait, but the collective side of the practice: the human ladder. Collaboration is one of pixação's founding values, and that is what she put on the label.
