Performances, portraits and informal encounters reveal the overlapping worlds of New York’s underground art and music scenes in New York Noise. Paula Court’s photographs bring together punk, no wave, hip-hop, experimental music and visual art, recording a community in which musicians made films, artists played in bands and collaborations crossed disciplines. More than four hundred black-and-white images follow these exchanges through the decade from 1978 to 1988.
Glenn Branca, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, David Byrne, Patti Smith and John Cage appear alongside groups including DNA, Suicide, ESG and Bush Tetras. Personal recollections from participants accompany the photographs, adding accounts of friendships, shared spaces and creative working conditions. Concert stages and quieter moments receive equal attention, building a picture of a scene through the people who inhabited it and the connections that sustained their work.
