In 2004, in the run-up to the Athens Olympics, Nike asked fifteen independent directors and motion designers to make short films about speed. The list reads like a who's who of early-2000s digital design: FriendsWithYou, Stefan Nadelman, Saiman Chow and Han Lee, Yugo Nakamura, Tronic Studio, KDLab and Justin Harder among them. The films went online on a white-on-white site by R/GA and on a blog run by Gawker Media, one of the first times a brand used a blog for a campaign, and onedotzero screened them in London at the ICA.
Art of Speed collects the films on paper and on disc. Genealogy of Speed goes into the Nike archive, with designers' interviews and the shoes built around lightness and speed. Together they show a brand commissioning the independent scene rather than just borrowing its look. For another self-portrait of a brand from the same years, see the adidas Superstar 35th Anniversary PR Book.
