Writers have always carried black books, sketchbooks passed from hand to hand where crew members and writers they respect leave a piece. On The Line built a magazine on that object. Its first issue, made in Los Angeles in June 1993, gives the page to the drawing itself: letter studies and full pieces reproduced largely as they were sketched, mostly in black and white, with one colour train composition that stands out.
It is a document from the moment before the wall or the train, when styles circulated on paper between writers. This copy shows handling wear and two holes along the left edge of the cover.
