Tracts, posters, flyers, press clippings, postcards, leaflets, brochures, compilations, bulletins, advertisements… Over more than fifty years, the passionate and erudite Paul Destribats assembled an exceptional collection of twelve thousand “small printed items.” With the exhibition “Petits papiers du 20e siècle”, followed by this publication, the Centre Pompidou celebrates this collection, which entered the Kandinsky Library through a tax-in-kind donation in 2021.
These “small printed items,” gathered with rigor and persistence for nearly fifty years by this passionate and learned collector, make it possible to discover and understand the fundamental role of print in the construction of the most radical avant-garde movements. They highlight the graphic and literary inventiveness specific to these publications and, as such, constitute a major contribution to the collections of the Musée national d'art moderne.
Following the division of Paul Destribats’s collection into major movements, this volume conveys its inestimable value through numerous texts devoted to some of its most remarkable components.
