T. Eric Monroe is a pioneering photographer and cultural documentarian whose work captures the raw energy of 90s hip hop and skateboarding culture. Raised in suburban New Jersey, Monroe first gained recognition in 1988 when Thrasher Magazine featured his skateboarding photography. By the early '90s, he was at the heart of New York's hip hop scene, eventually becoming photo editor at The Source Magazine in 1995—one of the most influential publications in hip hop history.
Monroe’s deep connection to youth culture led him to launch major projects that bridged skateboarding, marketing, and streetwear, collaborating with the likes of Tony Hawk, Activision, and Marc Ecko.
In 2010, seeing renewed interest in 90s hip hop, Monroe began revisiting his archives. The result is the now-iconic Rare & Unseen Moments of 90's Hiphop: Collector's Edition (from the trilogy Rare & Unseen Moments of 90’s Hip Hop), a visual time capsule that offers intimate, behind-the-scenes portraits of some of the most legendary figures in rap history.
More than just a photo book, this trilogy is essential for anyone passionate about hip hop, street culture, or the golden era of 90s creativity. Today, Monroe continues to share his vision through exhibitions, talks (including a recent one at Princeton), and collaborations worldwide.
