TR-808 – LinnDrum – SP-1200… or how samplers and drum machines gave birth to hip-hop.
The day drum machines and samplers entered hip-hop’s field of vision, nothing was ever the same again.
By diverting these machines from their original purpose, the culture born in the Bronx invented its own mode of creation — and forged its identity by reclaiming a technology that was never meant for it.
Programming beats, sampling a few notes from a vinyl record, then cutting and reshaping them until they became unrecognizable — hip-hop turned this revolutionary mode of production into the very DNA on which much of its foundation was built.
Refined, expanded, and reinvented since the 1980s by an army of curious and creative minds, this way of thinking and making music has since infiltrated — and transformed — every genre.
Through more than seventy original interviews conducted between the United States and France, Here Come the Drumstells the epic story of these machines, as well as of the pioneers who triggered an earthquake whose aftershocks are still being felt today.
