How did Air, the most prominent group of the French Touch movement, come to press a record in no more than 1,000 copies at the height of their international fame? This is the story of Music for Museum, the first, and to date only, original piece of music created specifically for a museum.
A singular volume within the Discogonie collection, marking a double tenth anniversary of both the series and the record itself, Music for Museum retraces the creation of the very first “original museum music,” commissioned from Air by the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille in 2014 and released at the time as a limited-edition vinyl.
Conceived in dialogue with the artworks on display, Music for Museum unfolds across the museum’s spaces like the four sides of a vinyl record. Drawing on interviews with Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin, as well as with many of the contributors to this unique artistic commission, Régis Cotentin explores an extraordinary creative process and its distinctive mode of presentation, offering valuable insights for fans of the band, contemporary artists, exhibition designers, and cultural institutions engaged in cross-disciplinary practices.
