Photographs place tags and painted pieces across Los Angeles, on freeway barriers, rooftops, railway yards and roadside walls, where the work can be seen from moving cars. The book is a visual record of the city’s writing rather than a history in prose: Roger Gastman’s short introduction sets out the background, followed by an interview with POWER, one of the city’s key figures. Contributions from SABER and RETNA bring writers’ own voices into the book. For a shop that sells books on local scenes, it documents a graffiti identity that developed outside New York, with its own lettering and its own spots.
