Produced in collaboration with Clube Nacional de São Paulo, Section 348 takes its title from Section 348 of the Canadian Criminal Code, which addresses breaking and entering with intent, committing an indictable offence, or breaking out. Drawing on photographs produced by the security personnel of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), the book examines administrative images documenting unauthorized entries into Montréal’s metro facilities between 2010 and 2020.
Created as evidentiary records following graffiti-related intrusions, these photographs capture traces of movement through tunnels, empty stations, maintenance areas, and other restricted spaces rarely seen by the public. Originally intended to support investigations, the images reveal a little-known and largely inaccessible dimension of graffiti within transit systems: not the finished works themselves, but the acts of access, concealment, and movement that precede their creation. Detached from their original function, these photographs offer a unique perspective on the relationships between graffiti writers, transportation infrastructure, and the surveillance mechanisms tasked with monitoring them. Through photographs documenting break-ins and their aftermath, Section 348shifts the focus away from painted surfaces toward the infrastructures, routes, and clandestine practices that make graffiti in transit systems possible.
