Queens Boulevard, major New York thoroughfare stretching over 11 kilometers, end-to-end on foot, in winter.
With his medium format 6x6 analog camera, Simon Souchois captures storefronts, signs, and urban markers encountered throughout this journey, yielding a visual cartography thereof. Little pedestrian traffic here—it is, in essence, a city highway which divides up different neighborhoods. From Long Island City to Jamaica, Queens Boulevard is a testament to New York City’s diversity; an uninterrupted tracking shot where African American, Caribbean, Asian, Hispanic, Slavic or Irish cultures adjoin one another, with little to no overlap...
A simple, raw observation of what the Boulevard reveals when one takes the time to stop along the way. Each photograph is in- dexed by the exact intersection where it was taken. This geographical meticulousness leads the viewer to retrace thephotographer’s steps, tantamount to a travel diary across the ur- ban maze. Fifty-some black-and-white portraits of street corners, frozen in the warm light of a New York winter.
To coincide with the release, the bookstore will also display a se- lection of hand-printed silver gelatin shots from this series, printed by the artist.
