Before social media, sneaker knowledge in Europe lived on forums, and in London the reference was Crooked Tongues. The people behind it, working as the design studio Unorthodox Styles (now U-Dox), wrote, photographed and designed this guide for Thames & Hudson. More than 180 models from eleven major brands, shot for the book in over 550 photographs, with brand histories, a glossary, a chronology and a directory of shops and websites.
2005 was the year sneaker culture moved into print. The same year saw Sneaker Freaker: The Book 2002–05 out of Melbourne and the adidas Superstar 35th anniversary. Twenty years on, the directory of shops and websites reads as a snapshot of a scene just before it went mainstream.
