At the turn of the millennium, the Gothic scene appeared to be in rather poor shape, torn between venerable elders struggling to reinvent themselves and a younger generation running out of inspiration. It was, in fact, from EBM or Industrial—against all expectations—that a new Gothic generation emerged, fed by other sounds and ready for every kind of experiment. For these young shoots, coming from almost all over the world, synthesizers and drum machines could be enough; duos or solo projects replaced traditional band lineups, and labels—multiplied by music platforms—fell apart: Gothic, Darkwave, Post-Punk, Coldwave, Dark Synth, and often all of them at once. It hardly matters, as long as one finds the darkness, the coldness, and the sepulchral atmospheres that inhabit this true dark renaissance, whose limits remain yet to be discovered. A renaissance that faithfully resurrects the spirit of the pioneers in order to propel it into the future. From this teeming ecosystem, from which promising new discoveries seem to emerge almost every month, we have selected thirty projects that we feel have proven themselves—like a snapshot of a scene in constant mutation.
