Directly derived from the electro-industrial music of the early 1980s, Dark Electro undeniably emerged under the impetus of the legendary Canadian group Skinny Puppy.
Since then, this musical style has undergone numerous hybridizations with related genres such as Electronic Body Music, Ambient, and more or less hard-edged Trance, even giving rise to new movements whose success has far exceeded its original form.
From the era of demo cassettes to distribution on streaming platforms, via CD releases by specialized labels; from the Vancouver school to the glory days of the German label Zoth Ommog; and up to the most recent acts that keep the flame of the genre alive without succumbing to commercial shortcuts—this issue of the Sous le Radar collection sets out to retrace its history through a selection of thirty projects. Thirty musical universes to explore, at the risk of the mental health of anyone daring to venture into its pages and its playlist, from Vancouver onward.
