Studio in the Street / Street in the Studio accompanied From Street to Studio, a 2007 exhibition at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center in Vermont, curated by Mara Williams, that brought together five artists from the New York streets of the 1980s: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Scot Borofsky, Brian Gormley, Keith Haring and Kenichi Hiratsuka. The book takes its title from Michael Carter's essay, and the question it asks: what happens when work made outside, on walls and pavements, comes back into the studio. Hiratsuka is represented by carved bluestone, granite and marble; Haring through Tseng Kwong Chi's photographs of him drawing in the New York subway in the early 1980s; Basquiat through Tseng's portraits of him with Andy Warhol.
