David Holland was drawing for Lowrider magazine under the name Teen Angel when he left in 1979 to start his own thing; the first issue of Teen Angel's appeared in 1981 and it ran for more than two hundred issues until 2006. Photocopied, black and white, made almost entirely of what readers sent in — hand-drawn portraits, poems written from prison, photographs from the barrio. It was carried in Chicano clothing stores and at lowrider shows across California and the Southwest, refused by mainstream distributors, and read by people who saw nothing of their own lives anywhere else on a newsstand. Holland, who was not himself Chicano, died in 2015.
Dedications reproduces one thing from that archive: the blank dedication page, the form readers filled in to send a message, a shout-out or a memorial to someone. 192 of them, perforated so they detach cleanly. It's a strange and rather beautiful object — an out-of-print magazine reissued as an invitation rather than a document, handing back the exact page thousands of people once used and leaving it empty.
