Handwritten labels, photocopied portraits and elaborate digital collages trace the changing visual language of hip-hop mixtapes in The Art Behind the Tape. Nearly 800 covers document a culture built through exchanges between DJs, designers, artists and listeners, following the transition from cassettes sold hand to hand to professionally produced CDs. Typography, street photography and image manipulation reveal how a cover could announce a DJ’s identity, promote new music and compete for attention.
Interviews with more than ninety participants connect these images to the people who made and circulated them. Their accounts explore the mixtape’s role as a platform for experimentation, self-promotion and musical discovery, alongside the practical work of producing and distributing independent releases. The result is a visual history of an everyday music format whose packaging became a distinctive expression of hip-hop culture.
