The Lex Series is an exhibition series aimed at building a solid interpretation of post-vandalism, a term coined by Stephen Burke. It is a continuous and progressive dialogue. What could be the intersection of vandalism in contemporary art? What is the current direction of graffiti within the artistic context?
The LEX series is a series of exhibitions that aims to draw attention to the development of the concept of the act of vandalizing, and specifically to the evolution of what can be the aesthetics and semantics of graffiti within a different social and urban context.
Starting from the definition of vandalism in social terms, we can consider it as an act of disdain or defiance toward society, in which the individual causes gratuitous damage to express anger, frustration, or simply for amusement.
To arrive at the concept of post-vandalism, and its consequent post-graffiti derivation, we have to reverse what we mean by destruction: how do we annihilate the act of destroying?
Whereas the institutionalized meaning of vandalism necessarily implies an unaware and uneducated connotation in the act of damage, consciously approaching the practice of destruction leads to the maturation of a specific aesthetic, leaving space for the development of a personal visual language.
The antithesis of destruction, then, is controlled destruction, which heads to the act of re-construction, where hate and disregard become love and sensitivity, in a conscious aesthetic and semantic output.
