Négroïde City is a photographic book born from Thierry Maignan's perspective on Paris and on the Black bodies that move through it, inhabit it, and shape it. Through this project, he reclaims a word and a history that have long been imposed, transforming them into an act of visibility and self-definition. His work is rooted in a process of reclamation and affirmation, seeking to restore space and recognition to presences that are still too often marginalized. Through street photography, Thierry Maignan documents a Black Paris: a Paris on the margins, a Paris that is real, far removed from stereotypes and imagined narratives. Simply being present, occupying public space, becomes an act in itself. His book reveals a city experienced from within, at street level, offering an alternative to cliché and invisibility. The result of ten years of work, Négroïde City is a deeply personal project that is at once photographic, social, and political. It challenges the way Black bodies are perceived, questions collective memory, and reflects on the place given to those who are still too often overlooked. Guided by photographer Cédric Roux, author of two critically acclaimed books, Thierry Maignan was able to develop a publication that reflects both his artistic standards and his ambitions. Published independently, Négroïde City embodies a deliberate commitment to creative freedom. Self-publishing has allowed him to remain fully faithful to his vision, his journey, and the message he wishes to convey. Through this book, Thierry Maignan offers both a testimony and an invitation: an invitation to look differently at what has always been there, yet remains too often unseen.
