Ttsss… is named after the sound of a spray can. The book is about pixação, the vertical tag-writing that covers São Paulo’s buildings, monuments and walls, and the first edition, published in 2006 by the BOLETA collective, was in Portuguese. This bilingual edition, with photographs by João Wainer, puts the writers’ own vocabulary in English. Practitioners write the word with an X to set it apart from pichação, a distinction the book keeps. For a shop that sells books on writing and its scenes, it documents a practice that has its own rules and its own audience in a city that rejects it.
