In the mid-1990s, a Bay Area writer who wanted to know what was running in the next town over found out through zines like Nite Crawlers. Made in the East Bay, black and white, letter-size and on a tight budget, it mixed photos of pieces with blackbook sketches, poems and material sent in by the writers themselves. A review of the time on Art Crimes praised the care behind it and regretted only the lack of colour. This eighth issue, from 1996, keeps that formula.
Thirty years later, the grayscale reads differently: without colour, what stays on the page is the letter structure. Later issues carried writers such as Phresh, Sug, Twist and Amaze. For another self-published American zine of the same years, see On The Line #1.
